With a population of more than 250,000 residents, Fort Wayne is Indiana's second largest city. The city lies in the northeastern corner of Indiana and in one of the most populated regions of the Midwest. Being such a significant city in this specific area, Fort Wayne has a well-developed transportation infrastructure to accommodate locals and visitors alike.
The dominant form of transportation in Fort Wayne is by roads. An extensive network of interstate highways, state routes, US routes, and local roads surrounds the city. Fort Wayne is located right along Interstate 69, which leads directly down to Indianapolis (about 120 miles away) and up north towards Michigan. I-469 connects to I-69 and forms a beltway around Forty Wayne. Additionally, major cities such as Chicago and Detroit are both located about 160 miles away from Fort Wayne. I-69 would also lead you to these two cities, as it connects to I-90 and I-94.
Another major road that passes through the heart of Fort Wayne is US Route 27. This road actually forms a focal point where several other state and US routes merge together, such as Indiana State Road 37 and Indiana State Road 930. These roads are primarily used by people from Fort Wayne's small suburbs, such as New Haven and even Ohio communities such as Hicksville Township.
Located near exit 6 of the I-469 beltway, the Fort Wayne International Airport serves more than 600,000 passengers a year from Fort Wayne and other nearby communities. The airport has flights to major cities such as Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Orlando, Cincinnati, and Minneapolis through airlines like Delta Connection, American Eagle, and Allegiant Air.
Public transportation in Fort Wayne is provided only by buses, as there aren't any rail services. In fact, the nearest train station is about 25 miles away in Waterloo, which has Amtrak service along the Capitol Limited and
Lake Shore Limited lines.
Citilink, which is operated by Fort Wayne Public Transportation Corporation, provides a dozen bus routes throughout the city. For example, Route 1 is known as Waynedale via Broadway Northcrest, which runs between the social security office and Northside High School and stops at locations such as St. Joseph Hospital and Northcrest Shopping Center. Citilink offers several discounts on its fares, such as all-day pass, monthly pass, and senior citizen cards. It's also important to note that Citilink does not operate on Sundays. During the summer, Citilink provides free trolley rides in the downtown area along the special Citiloop route.
